OpenDocument Format Icon

Proposal for an OpenDocument icon

The idea is that each icon maker (desktop environments, applications, etc) will make their own icon set, suitable for their environment, but will include this image so that the user can recognize the document as an OpenDocument file.
Think of PDF. KDE and Gnome have different PDF icons, but both are recognizable as PDF beause of the red squiggle that is associated with PDF. Wouldn't it be nice to have something like that for OpenDocument? Having such an image would significantly improve awareness of the OpenDocument format.
What features do we want in an OpenDocument icon? The most important features are:
- It must be simple and memorable.
- It must look all right at all sizes, including very small sizes like 16x16.
Those are the crucial bits. And the above icon has these features.

Some examples
Here are some ideas as to the sort of thing you could do with the above image to make a full iconset for OpenDocument. These are just ideas. Each implementor will make an iconset that fits well within their particular environment.
Some generic icons for the various ODF file types:

Odds and Ends:

To facilitate making derivative works based on
this ODF monogram, here is the Gimp xcf master. I find it works best if you feather the selection 10 pixels, colour fill then reduce to size.
These icons and more, along with the graphic elements used to create them are available on this page with some file archives for easy download of multiple icons.
They are licenced under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. I am more than happy to discuss other arrangements for specific projects.
A few icons for the KDE Crystal theme, the default KDE theme in Fedora GNU / Linux and elsewhere.

Copy each icon into the relevant icon directory according to size, then rename kdeodf.png - e. g.
cp kdeodf64x64.png /usr/share/icons/crystalsvg/64x64/mimetypes/kdeodf.png
As derivative works of the KDE Crystal Theme they are licensed under the LGPL.
Some mime type icons to match the Gnome style:

As derivative works of the Gnome icon theme they are licensed under the GPL.
Last Edit 20060727 Peter Harlow - Add Mime Type icons, links, cleanup.
